Solstice ’93 (collaboration with Laura Grace Ford) [2022]

Stereo Sound Installation

Solstice ’93 is a site-specific sound installation developed in response to the events of summer 1993, when Dorich House was occupied by squatters and used for raves. The work draws together music, memory and speculative narrative to evoke the textures and atmospheres of the early 1990s rave scene, situating listeners within the suburban landscape of Kingston at that time and reanimating a particular moment in the house’s recent history.

Produced with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of The Squatter Years: Recovering Dorich House Museum’s Recent Past, the project contributes to an ongoing exploration of contested space, memory and urban experience.

The project was initiated and led by Laura Grace Ford, whose practice engages the politics and poetics of place through approaches such as cognitive mapping, hauntology and the dérive. The installation was realised through a collaborative process, with the sonic dimension developed in close dialogue with Ford’s conceptual framework, shaping how the work is encountered and experienced through sound.
